Innovative theatre company Imitating the Dog presents its latest production, Heart of Darkness, at The Lowry this month. Taking Joseph Conrad’s influential 1899 novella Heart of Darkness as its subject matter, the company moves the story from Congo to war-torn Europe, as it explores themes of race, gender, exploitation, violence and nationalism – presented at a time when Britain’s own relationship with Europe is under strain. The production fuses live performance with digital technology, including projection and video, for what is described as ‘an animated Cinemascope graphic novel’. Imitating the Dog, which formed in 1998 and has previously toured an acclaimed adaptation of Ernest Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms, has been credited by the Guardian as ‘a company without imitators, it is currently without peer’.
