As Halloween approaches, you will notice that Manchester is really getting into the spirit of things. Much of the city centre will soon be awash with spooky decorations, including a giant inflatable monster on House of Fraser. This is all building up to Halloweekend, a major celebration taking place throughout the area. There are many, many events planned, and three of the best are here outlined:

Halloween Pop-up Cinema at Victoria Baths
Tickets are on sale now for screenings of three seasonal classics: Hocus Pocus, The Addams Family, and Beetlejuice. A bar will be open throughout the events, serving soft and not-so-soft drinks and, of course, popcorn. There will also be street food venders on hand, too. You are encouraged to dress up in Halloween costume, but you may also want to bring blankets, as the venue is unheated. The afternoon screenings are suitable for everyone ages 6 and up, but the evening events are for over 16s only.

Fri 27 and Sat 28 Oct, Victoria Baths, Hathersage Road, Chorlton-on-Medlock, Manchester, M13 0FE. Prices and event times vary, www.thevillagegreenevents.co

Big Fish Little Fish – Family Rave at The Birdcage
The organisers of this event are self-described ‘2 to 4 Hour Party People’ – experts in parties for families. And the high camp of The Birdcage makes it the perfect venue for this afternoon of DJs, glitter cannons, balloons, and craft tables. The theme is ‘Spooky Science’, and there will be live experiments and activities by the folks from Chester Zoo. There’s also a chill out area for babies and a licensed bar – so they truly are catering for all ages.

Sun 29 Oct, The Birdcage, Withy Grove, Manchester, M4 3AQ. 2pm – 4.30pm, £8.50/£6.50, www.manchestersciencefestival.com

Halloween Fun Run at Heaton Park
This less than serious race is open to everyone, and you are free to run, jog, or walk the 5km route. Watch out for the spooky residents of the park who will be lurking around the course, and the terrors of ‘The Tunnel’. The event starts and finishes at Heaton Hall, where there will be lots of activities and entertainment, a sound system, and refreshments. All those who make it to the end will receive a finishers’ bag with a glow-in-the-dark medal.

Sun 29 Oct, Heaton Park, Middleton Road, Manchester, M25 2SW. 12pm – 3pm, £10/£5, www.sportstoursinternational.co.uk
