Manchester Jazz Festival is now on, filling Manchester’s live venues with jazz, flamenco and much more. The hub of the event is Albert Square, where you’ll find a live performance tent, however, many other venues are involved, including Band on the Wall and RNCM. Highlights of the programme include Antonio Sanchez at Band on the Wall (Tue 26 Jul, 7.30pm, £18/20), the multi-Grammy award-winning drummer who wrote the score for Birdman. We also like the look of rising tuba player Theon Cross (pictured, Thu 28 Jul, Central Library, 3.30pm, £7) who brings afro-funk and electro-beat from London with his trio, and a new-wave flamenco show from Niño de Elche (Sat 30 Jul, Festival Pavilion, Albert Square, 1pm, £5). There are many free performances across the city too – just click on the day by day guide below for your fix. If you like your jazz on film, there’s a concurrent season running at HOME which includes films and documentaries such as Thelonius Monk: Straight, No Chaser, Bird and Tubby Hayes: A Man in a Hurry.
