With National Vegetarian Week on its way, Manchester is as good a place as any to celebrate it with many a restaurant either offering a full on veggie menu or a sure fire selection of veggie choices. We’ve rounded up our five favourite for you with a suggestion of dishes to try below.
1. Foodwell in Salford
Headed up by ex-Allotment head chef and MFDF Chef of the Year Matthew Nutter, Foodwell has been creating a name for itself in the new New Bailey area of town. Inspired by California style wellness offering breakfast from 7am, through yoga classes, through to drink at 11pm, this is aiming to place vegan food front and centre of a healthy lifestyle and we’d recommend the cauli done in this Cali style. Foodwell, One New Bailey, Stanley Street, Salford M3 5JL. Tel: 0161 989 4040. www.thefoodwell.co.uk
2. Allotment in Stockport
One of Stockport’s finest restuarants upped sticks and moved to Manchester city centre last year and their loss is Manchester’s gain. As the name suggest, Allotment is a plant friendly place, and a full on fine dining vegan palace. The butternut squash bon bon on the 10 course taster menu will make you consider making ten courses of that alone.
Allotment, 18 / 22 Lloyd Street, Manchester, M2 5WA, Tel: 0161 768 5269, www.allotmentvegan.co.uk
3. Common in the Northern Quarter
One of the Northern Quarter’s oldest and most loved bars is also one of its best joints for veggies. The Edge Street boozer offers menus throughout the day that includes some superb veggie offerings. Not least of all is their burger menu which includes their topical Beyond Fake News burger using the hot meat substitute Beyond Meat burger.
Common, 39-41 Edge Street, Manchester M4 1HW, Tel: 0161 832 9245, www.aplacecalledcommon.co.uk
4. Lily’s in Ashton
It’s hard to ever discuss vegetarian food in Manchester without Ashton’s jewel coming up. Well worth the tram ride out of town if you’ve managed to get a booking, the post-Ikea joint will fill you with all manner of spiced delights, anything paneer is a winner.
Lily’s Indian Vegetarian Cuisine, 5 Oldham Road, Ashton-under-Lyne OL6 7DY, Tel: 0161 339 4774, www.facebook.com
5. Bundobust in Piccadilly
Indian cuisine has always been a go to for vegetarians and Bundobust is more than aware of this. Not content with just offering some great veggie food, they’ve made sure their whole menu is veggie. With a lot of love from people like Jay Rayner, we can’t really argue, especially with their bhatura which its hard not to over order.
Bundobust, 61 Piccadilly, Manchester M1 2AG, Tel: 0161 359 6757, www.bundobust.com
