There’s plenty to pop in your diary for the new season in Sale, where Waterside reopens with a fresh lick of paint and some unmissable entertainment, from comedy and theatre to talks and readings. Here are five of our top picks for September…

Comedy: Best of Buzz Comedy
Get two-and-a-half hours of hilarity and three super stand-ups for the price of one, with Time Out award-winner and Perrier nominee Simon Bligh, self-deprecating funnyman Craig Deeley and celebrity impressions expert Steff Todd. And don’t forget to check out the special Comedy & Curry Deal for full bellies as well as belly-laughs.
Sat 1 Sep, 8pm, £11-13, watersidearts.org

Literature: Northern Lights Writers’ Conference
The annual event for emerging and established writers is back for a fifth year, with an all-day programme of creative sessions with award-winning scribes and performers, and talks by publishing industry experts, plus valuable networking opportunities and a keynote speech by Chocolat author Joanne Harris MBE.
Sat 8 Sep, 10.30am-6pm, £30-35, watersidearts.org

Theatre: Luca Rutherford’s Political Party
Co-commissioned by Northern Stage, the Albany, Camden People’s Theatre and Unity Theatre, this ARC Stockton show is about getting on with doing actual politics instead of just getting on with talking about politics. Complete with music and dancing, this is a political party with a difference, and you’re invited!
Sat 22 Sep, 7.30pm, £9-11, watersidearts.org

Theatre: Gulliver Returns
Dan Coleman’s play explores one possible solution to Brexit – losing yourself in Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels. In a tale of broken dreams, enduring love and the weird world in which we live, Lil must try and drag her husband out of his ever-deepening fantasy and back into reality before it’s too late for both of them.
Thu 27 Sep, 8pm, £10-12, watersidearts.org

Talk: Neil Oliver: The Story of the British Isles in 100 Places
Presenter of BBC2’s Coast, Neil Oliver is well placed to remind us what’s so great about Great Britain and make us fall in love with the place all over again. Drawing on his unique insight into and understanding of British history and geography, Neil gives a warm and entertaining account of his encounters around the United Kingdom.
