As the Northern Quarter slowly homogenises into one big giant burger bar with craft beers there are a few good old-fashioned pubs still keeping the great tradition alive. One such boozer is the Unicorn Hotel on Church Street, a no-nonsense establishment that is about to start a no-nonsense comedy night. Your compere for the evening is the uncompromising Freddy Quinne. A natural comic with near perfect timing, Quinne guides us through unknown comedy terrain with the help of Lewis ‘Big Lou’ Jones, Nick Parry, recent Beat The Frog World Series winner Penella Mellor and headline act Holly Walsh (pictured). Walsh is a bright young thing on the national circuit, and has appearances on Never Mind The Buzzcocks, 8 Out of 10 Cats and Mock The Week under her belt. This new comedy night at the Unicorn will continue on the first Wednesday of every month, having set the bar very high with their first outing. Let’s hope they maintain the standards they’ve set for themselves.
