Refract:17 is almost upon us – and we have a bunch of tickets to give away. Waterside Arts’ summer celebration of all things unconventional has plenty for visitors of all ages, from improv comedy to flamenco music to storytelling in a giant bird’s nest. Six lucky Wire readers can get in for free to either Mr Wilson’s Second Liners or The Demon Barbers XL – you choose! In a genre-defying club night, Mr Wilson’s Second Liners (Thu 27 Jul, 8pm, £10) will encourage 24 hour party people to get on down to a mix of New Orleans brass and 1990s club classics. Support comes from theatrical rockers Felix Hagan & The Family, recently seen supporting Frank Turner, and HomoElectric’s award-winning DJ Jamie Bull. Expect the evening to be colourful, anarchic and full of glitter. Meanwhile, The Demon Barbers (Sun 30 Jul, 7.30pm, £17.50) is a must for fans of 21st century folk music. Following sell-out performances of their hip hop-inspired extravaganza ‘The Lock In’, the Barbers bring their XL night to Refract with a new repertoire and extra band members – including clog, sword and break dancers. Best Live Act at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards? This is not one to be missed. To be in with a chance of either two pairs of tickets to Mr Wilson’s Second Liners or a pair of tickets to The Demon Barbers, simply email competitions [at] manchesterwire [dot] co [dot] uk with either ‘Mr Wilson Competition’ or ‘Demon Barbers Competition’ in the subject line, along with your name, age, Twitter name and phone number. Competition closes at midnight on Mon 24 July. The winner will be announced the following day. Over 18s only. Go to it!
