In early February, Band on the Wall will be host to Womenfolk, a concert showcasing three acclaimed female folk artists. Headliner Kathryn Williams first hit the scene in 1999 with her self-financed debut album. Since then, nine more albums and a Mercury Prize nomination have followed. No stuffy folk purist, Williams has collaborated with Bombay Bicycle Club and covered Pavement’s Spit on a Stranger. Joining Williams is Georgia Ruth (pictured), an Aberystwyth-based singer-songwriter and harpist who was nominated for two prizes at last year’s BBC Folk Awards. She also collaborated with fellow Walians the Manic Street Preachers on their latest album. Completing the line-up is Maz O’Connor, a singer and pianist whose second album, last year’s The Willowed Light, won her plaudits across the board, from Q Magazine to those well-known folkies The Financial Times.
