Afflecks Arcade’s Three Minute Theatre hosts a day of talks and musical interludes for a conference on women’s history this Saturday. Guest speakers from across the country will descend upon the Oldham Street den usually reserved for gigs and fringe plays. Splitting the day into two halves with the morning session covering women in politics and music, and feature gifted singer-songwriter and community arts worker Claire Mooney while playwright and former Chumbawumba member Alice Nutter will discuss the role gender takes in these spheres of influence. A two-part study of women as political activists follows, separated by lunch, with the conference welcoming speakers Sonja Tiernan, Michael Herbert, Alan Fowler, Rae Street and Nick Wilding. The final section of the event sees a panel discussion on socialism and feminism chaired by activist and writer Bernadette Hyland, with former editor of Socialist Review Lindsey German and historian and author Louise Raw also on hand. The conference promises to be a day of discourse in an intimate surrounding, asking valuable questions at a critical time.
