The BBC Philharmonic orchestra continues its celebration of the life, work and influences of West Side Story composer, conductor and all around legend, Leonard Bernstein, at The Bridgewater Hall as part of its American Adventure series. Bernstein was involved in a number of international music festivals as well as being a long-term associate of the New York Philharmonic, and this performance includes an appearance by Yutaka Sado (pictured), with whom Bernstein founded the Pacific Music Festival in Sapporo (Japan), as guest conductor. Sado will be leading the musicians through three of Bernstein’s favourite pieces, selected for their contrasting styles. Alongside a performance of Bernstein’s emotionally-charged Jeremiah, a piece which was received with an avalanche of critical acclaim when first performed in 1944 – and has continued to wow audiences ever since – and Schumann’s Symphony No 2 in C Major, the programme includes Mozart’s playful Piano Concerto No 17 in G Major, with pianist Ronald Brautigam on solo duties. This concerto is said to have been such a favourite of the composer that he taught his pet bird to whistle the tune. With a huge discount on offer for students, those with deadlines approaching can reap the rewards of a night spent in the company of this trio of compositions for just £3 (click here for info). Other events in this series include Joybox by name, Joyful by nature, on (Fri 20 Nov www.bbc.co.uk). Watch this space for details.
