On Sat 16 Aug, residents of Oldham are invited to become part of history – and create some of their own – as the town’s beloved Old Library welcomes guests for a free, one-off family Open Day ahead of its grand reopening this autumn.
Running from 12pm–4pm, the absorbing afternoon offers families and heritage-lovers the first chance to explore the stunningly restored building, revelling in the stories and architecture behind the longstanding local landmark.

Alongside the series of guided tours, the library hosts a fabulously entertaining programme of family activities throughout the day in the brand-new community garden. Visitors can enjoy toe-tapping music from Flat Cap Brass and feel-good Lancashire tunes from Flat Cap 3, creative arts and crafts sessions inspired by the building’s heritage from Oldham Play Action Group, meet-and-greets with hometown mascots Ollie and Millie, and even an appearance from William Shakespeare – while Phileas Fogg stops by on day 79 of his famed journey around the world.
Councillor Arooj Shah, Leader of Oldham Council, said:
“The Old Library holds such a special place in my heart and I remember visiting it as a child, and like so many people in Oldham, I have fond memories of the building. Seeing it brought back to life has been a emotional journey.
“A lot of hard work, care and dedication has gone into its restoration, and I know residents will be just as proud and excited as I am to see it open its doors again.
This open day is a chance for all of us to come together, celebrate its past, and look forward to the amazing future it has ahead.”
