This Friday, A Suffocating Choking Feeling brings an incisive, unsettling satire that exposes the sinister world of social media storytelling, in which trauma is currency and attention reigns supreme.
Loosely inspired by disgraced wellness influencer Belle Gibson, the show follows Simone Hamilton, a rising singer and online personality who shares her battle with illness while relentlessly chasing the approval of her followers, optimising every post for sympathy, sanctimony and impact – burying the truth in the process.
Blending live theatre with interactive social media experiments, the production blurs the lines between performance and participation, subversively encouraging audiences to use their phones throughout the show to scroll, troll and even cancel Simone as her online gambit spirals out of control. The result is a timely, darkly comic take on how we construct, consume and exploit authenticity in a Faustian online society.
