The Portico Library has submitted planning applications to Manchester City Council for a historic expansion of the literary landmark.
The library’s transformational Reunited project – supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund – will see the Grade II listed building spread over three floors for the first time in over a century, creating a fully accessible and sustainable cultural library in the heart of the city.

The Portico’s Reunited expansion plans will include:
- A step-free entrance and lift, making the Portico accessible to all.
- Exhibition and event spaces to explore the stories of Manchester’s communities and the city’s local/global heritage.
- A Northern Bookshop, showcasing regional and emerging writers, and independent publishers.
- A creative Portico Kitchen, celebrating the city’s food culture, writing and history.
- A place for school groups, families, and all people to explore the library’s collection and experiment creatively.
- Improved collections care for the Library’s 25,000 historic books and archives.

Commenting on the plans, Dr Thom Keep, Librarian & Chief Executive of the Portico Library, said: “Portico Reunited is about more than restoring a building. It’s about opening doors – to stories, ideas, heritage and communities across Greater Manchester.
“These plans secure the Portico’s future, unlocking the power of heritage to inspire Manchester’s visitors and residents to explore, share, and celebrate their stories and the city’s literary and global heritage.
“If approved, the Library will close for around 18 months for construction, during which time it will continue to engage the public through its ‘Porti-GO!’ pop-up programme.”

Founded in 1806, the Portico Library & Newsroom is a 219-year-old independent library that is free to enter and hosts an eclectic programme of exhibitions, events, and learning activities that complement its unique collection of over 25,000 books, archives, and illustrations spanning more than 450 years.
The Portico will be embarking on a range of fundraising activities to realise its ambitious plans. Find out how you can get involved via the Portico website.
