The Hallé and Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood will join forces for a special performance at The Bridgewater Hall this February.

Celebrating Greenwood’s love of orchestral string writing, he will join the renowned orchestra on electric bass and tanpura, a long-necked, fretless, plucked lute from the Indian subcontinent.

In Water, the warmth of the Hallé strings envelopes two flutes and the tanpura on a journey of ‘rippling colour’. Lutosławski’s moving Musique funèbre, dedicated to the pioneering composer Bela Bartók, also forms part of the evening’s programme, as does Steve Reich’s lyrical Pulse, which is a tenderly contemplative, yet constantly pulsating, work.

Finally, Greenwood’s groundbreaking Horror Vacui, performed by Daniel Pioro, plays upon the artistic concept of ‘the fear of empty spaces’ — using the full sonic potential of the solo violin and extensive string orchestra, he creates an eerily liminal soundscape, building in atmosphere and intensity throughout each movement.
