The Portico has announced a couple of special food-focused events to be hosted at the historic library in the coming weeks.

First up, on Sat 21 Feb, is the debut edition of The Portico’s new Food for Thought Conversation Club. Opening the series with How Should We Eat? Portico Kitchen manager Joe Fenn delves into the decisions we make when it comes to food and the implications these can have on our health.

Inspired by the library’s history of idea sharing, the event invites guests to engage with different perspectives in a laid-back setting. Priced at £25, tickets include a two-course set lunch, plus tea and coffee.

Then, on Thu 5 Mar, The Portico kicks off a series of afternoon tea experiences inspired by great works of literature from Manchester and the wider world. For the first event, the kitchen team will be celebrating Anthony Burgess’ cult classic, A Clockwork Orange.

Drawing inspiration from the Korova Milk Bar, ‘the old ultra-violence’ and other elements of Burgess’ breathtaking dystopia, this is a unique opportunity to explore one of Manchester’s most famous books in one of its oldest literary institutions.

Ticket price includes a full afternoon tea service, including a selection of sandwiches, cakes, tarts, preserves and more, as well as bottomless Brew Tea Co. loose leaf tea. Add a glass of prosecco for £7 or a bottle for £25.
