This June, narrative dance masters Northern Ballet arrive at Lowry with Gentleman Jack, a vivid, sensuous and thrillingly charged new production charting the extraordinary life of Anne Lister, the unapologetically independent Yorkshirewoman whose story continues to resonate across generations.
Choreographed by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa and performed to an evocative original score by Peter Salem, the ballet traces Lister’s story of unbowed defiance in the face of stifling 19th century norms, choosing to live, love and dress on her own terms. Her secret diaries, discovered after her death, revealed a remarkable journey of liberation, heartbreak and resistance told with stark honesty and incisive wit.
Blending expressive choreography with live music and fabulously stylish staging, Gentleman Jack captures both the intimacy and scale of Lister’s journey, offering a spellbinding balletic portrait that is at once deeply personal and profoundly influential.
