This month, a brand-new dark comedy from Päi Productions takes over The Edge with a sharp, profoundly recognisable examination of family dynamics, ageing, mortality and the shifting relationships between mothers and their adult children.
Written by Paris Rogers and directed by Kim Burnett, Mothers and Daughters follows Jenna and her girlfriend Tasha as they take the daunting next step in their relationship: arranging a dinner for their mothers to meet for the first time. As the night progresses, the best-laid plans for a simple introduction spirals into a chaotic scene of burnt food, boozy confessions, outrageous anecdotes and unexpected connections.
Amongst the mayhem, Jenna and Tasha begin to realise that their mothers are getting older, and that the balance of care and independence is starting to tilt.
Blending incisive humour with moments of achingly resonant tenderness, the production explores love, ageing and the complex bonds between women across generations.
Starring Karen Henthorn, currently appearing in EastEnders and known for roles in Coronation Street, Shameless and Vera, alongside Isabel Ford, fresh from filming Through The Eyes of Bairns, Mothers and Daughters expands on a previously sold-out 15-minute piece, and premieres in Chorlton as a full-length production.
