This May, acclaimed theatre-makers The Wardrobe Ensemble head to Lowry with Party Season, a biting and darkly comic contemporary theatre show that transforms the scattered chaos of children’s birthday parties into an uncomfortably recognisable portrait of modern adulthood.

Set across one fraught weekend of soft play politics, balloon animals and precarious, excruciatingly strained small talk, the production follows young parent Xander as he returns to town and finds himself swiftly pulled into a circus of fatherly obligations. While children vanish into ball pits and harried entertainers blow bubbles nearby, the grown-ups circle one another over party food and brittle conversation as old tensions, class insecurities and buried resentments begin to emerge through the thin patina of civility.

From the multi-award-winning creators of Education, Education, Education and The Last of the Pelican Daughters, Party Season brings a whip-smart balance of absurdist humour, incisive emotional intelligence and startlingly profound pathos, capturing the peculiar performance of contemporary parenthood in all its exhausting, competitive and pitifully desperate projections.

Described as “a relatable, silly and charming depiction of the chaos and pressures of parenting” by The Stage, the show promises a sugar-fuelled fever dream where social niceties gradually unravel and sleep-deprived adults struggle to maintain composure, ultimately uncovering a compelling examination of identity, privilege and self-esteem from the rituals of family life.
