Salford Crescent’s latest improvement works have been given the green light by the rail regulator, with the station’s third platform expected to open later this year.
The Office of Rail and Road (ORR) has authorised a series of works at Salford Crescent which include a new 157-metre platform, extended footbridge, and new lift. A new gateline will also open adjacent to the existing station building.
ORR has worked closely with Network Rail and the wider project team throughout the authorisation process. Work began on Salford Crescent station early 2025. The improvements are expected to improve passenger flow and reduce train delays, and allow more flexibility for trains travelling through central Manchester and across the country.
Steve Fletcher, deputy director, engineering and asset Management, said: “This is an important step in getting the busy Salford Crescent station ready to open its new platform to help improve how passengers move through the station.
“We’re pleased to have played our part in getting the improvements ready to be put into use. Our team worked closely with Network Rail to support them through the authorisation process, just as we do for new trains and infrastructure across the country.”
