The Christmas markets may be open again, providing meats and mulled wine to the general public willing to spend half their gift money on such treats, but there is one area where the markets suffer. They are outside. And it is cold. As an alternative – a warmer alternative – why not head to the Bury Beer Festival, taking place this weekend at The Met. They have beers and ciders from Outstanding Beers, Irwell Works and Red Bank Cider, as well as a new Bury brewery Deeply Vale, alongside a hand-picked selection of ales, ciders and perries from across the North West, all hosted by Automatic and the team behind Ramsbottom Festival. Food comes in true northern form: pie, mash and peas (steak and ale or butter pie), The Great British Banger and of course, Bury Black Pudding. Warm yourself at a proper British beer festival, because after all it’s not really Christmas yet is it. It’s November. And it is cold.

Fri 15 & Sat 16 Nov, The Met, Market Street, Bury, BL9 0BW, Fri 12pm – 5pm & 5pm – 12am, Sat 12pm – 12am, £2 – £4, http://www.burybeerfestival.co.uk
