Innovative ‘festival and innovation lab’ FutureEverything returns in March with the theme Tools For Unknown Futures: an exploration of tools as ‘the most natural path towards social change’, and a look towards the future. A fusion of innovative culture and new technologies, this year’s programme includes a pop-up city, contemporary and new media artworks, sound installations, live music, performance, and a two-day conference featuring some of the most renowned practitioners and thinkers in the field. Tim Hecker
Canadian sound artist Tim Hecker (pictured) brings his dense soundscapes to RNCM in support of his most recent album, Virgins – the follow up 2011’s well-received RaveDeath, 1972. A forerunner in ambient electronica, Hecker layers pianos, synthesisers and woodwind instruments to create a masterful spectrum of moods and a real listener’s experience. Support comes from Julianna Barwick, who blends her impressive vocal range with loop-based compositions.

Emmanuel Biard (EMN) and David Leonard: The Hall (live)
Commissioned by FutureEverything and RNCM, visualist Emmanuel Biard and engineer David Leonard take over the Studio Theatre to premiere their most recent installation. Having previously worked with The Warehouse Project, this new piece consists of two giant circular flexible mirrors sealed into a frame with vacuum pumps, onto which lasers and optics will be projected to form a ‘collimated reflection loop’. Titled The Hall, Sunday evening will see the installation brought to life with a live show from fellow FutureEverything performer Evian Christ and other special guests. Mika Vainio / Source Direct / Ninos Du Brasil / EVOL
One of Manchester’s finest promoters of cutting-edge electronic and techno music, Faktion, return for this year’s festival to host an evening of dance music auteurs and pioneers. Having last performed a FutureEverything 2010, Finnish producer Mika Vainio will be bringing back his staple custom modified hardware, while one half of Source Direct, Jim Baker, will be hitting the decks with some of the duo’s classics as well as unreleased and new edits. Also performing will be Italian duo Ninos Du Brasil, who will be bringing the carnival vibes with their mix of techno and colourful costumes, and ‘original computer music hoologians’, EVOL.
