Heavenly Recordings and the Pennine hills – a marriage made in Hebden? The indie record label is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a special weekend event in Hebden Bridge, centring around the town’s legendary Trades Club venue from January 22-25 2015. Top of the Saturday bill is gravel-voiced grunge god Mark Lanegan (pictured), whose current album, Phantom Radio (with synths!), is his best solo effort since Bubblegum. But the ex-Screaming Trees frontman is only one of many delights over the four days, celebrating a label launched by Jeff Barrett in 1990 with the release of ‘The World According To Sly & Lovechild’ and whose recorded roster includes Manic Street Preachers, Beth Orton, Saint Etienne and Doves. Indeed Doves’ Jimi Goodwin is performing, as are Temples, The Wytches, TOY, The Voyeurs, Kid Wave, Duke Garwood, Cherry Ghost, Eaves, Stealing Sheep and Hooton Tennis Club. A theatre with 150 seats beside the Trades Club will also show two Heavenly Films, How We Used To Live and a rare screening of Lawrence Of Belgravia, followed by a Q&A with filmmakers Paul Kelly and Bob Stanley, ex-St Etienne and author of the definitive history of modern pop, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah has just come out in paperback.
