As part of its Thursday Late series, this month the Whitworth will present a free film screening hosted by DJ Spooky. Rebirth of a Nation is a DJ Spooky’s ‘remix’ of DW Griffith’s notorious 1915 film that glorified the Ku Klux Klan. The result is a deconstruction with a modern statement about race relations. The film has been screened all over the world – even at the amphitheatre of the Acropolis. Real name Paul D’Shonne Miller, Spooky is a hip-hop turntablist and music producer from New York. He also has a prestigious career as mixed-media artist, drawing inspiration from sources as diverse as Andy Warhol and Marcel Duchamp. After the screening, Spooky himself will discuss the film’s themes and his motivations for producing the work. This event is free but spaces are limited, so book your place soon.
