Free things to do this week ft HOME + Kids’ Disco

The kids are off school, so whether you’re looking to keep your own entertained, or merely looking for a safe haven away from the screaming hordes, we’ve got you covered with our rundown of free picks for this week.

First Exhibitions at HOME
After an endless build up, HOME finally opened its doors at the weekend and as well as an impressive programme of film and theatre, they’ve kicked off with a couple of interesting little exhibitions. The first, The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things (pictured), tackles modern love and heartbreak with work from a number of artists and writers. The second exhibition, entitled #givemeeverythingandnothingbaby is a showcase of work from printmaker Magda Archer, who riffs on all things pop culture.

Kids’ Silent Disco at MOSI
Running daily over the half term is this, a silent disco aimed at Children. A world away from the shooters and sticky floors student union affairs that we’re all familiar with, this family-friendly disco plays a range of music for all different age groups: From your pre-teens (Taylor Swift, probably) to your toddlers (a series of discordant noises, probably). An excellent distraction for a wet afternoon.

Mézières-Manchester Exhibition at Central Library
The town of Mézières in France was levelled by the First World War, and it was only through the efforts of some plucky Mancunians that it got adopted and rebuilt. This exhibition, marking the centenary of the rebuild, looks at both the construction and the longstanding relationship between Mézières and Manchester. This exhibition ends at the weekends, so it’s worth jumping on before it’s too late.
