Cafe Istanbul, one of Manchester’s oldest turkish restaurants, turns 35 soon – and it’s come up with a pretty unique way to celebrate: by opening up a jazz club in its basement. It’s the first new jazz club to open up in the city since 1999, and it open on Friday 18 September for a big launch bash. La Gitane, as it’s called, is in very capable hands, with Matt and Phreds founder Matt Nickson handpicking musicians for the opening event and beyond. Cafe Istanbul’s owner Sacit Onur used to run a jazz club called La Gitane in the basement of what’s now known as the Liars Club on Bridge Street in the 1990s.
From Fri 18 Sep, La Gitane at Cafe Istanbul 79-81 Bridge Street, M3 2RH, www.cafeistanbul.co.uk
