Fri 12 Aug – Deaf Institute 8th Birthday afterparty
The Deaf Institute is one of those venues that touring bands and DJs always remember, its unique character an ode to the best of Manchester. This celebration will see a live element (including Everything Everything, Dutch Uncles and Marc Riley, already sold out) and DJs kicking off at 6pm, including SNO playing hip hop, soul, Afro and more as Bophelong, 80s crew Girls On Film and Gold Teeth plus my good self amongst the selectors, with cross genre specialists So Flute and funk and soul heads You Dig taking over after the bands upstairs. Fri 12 Aug – Dynamite Soul @ The Whiskey Jar
‘If you’re coming to hear fluffy niceness and have a pleasant little shuffle, you’ll be sorely disappointed..’ warns Wayne Fatshoolaces, one of seven DJs playing nothing but heavy soul and deep funk over seven hours. No Motown or Northern Soul anthems here, the emphasis is on the grit.

Fri 12 Aug – Dancehall vs Soca @ The Ritz
Extrapolating the weekend’s Manchester Caribbean Carnival vibes (taking place all weekend in Alexandra Park), this night pitches two of the sunshine islands’ biggest genres and pitches them head to head – audience participation is fully required. The venue is known for its sprung dancefloor as it is, but with this party it’s the roof I’d worry about.

Fri 12 Aug – Juicy: Summer Jams @ Gorilla
The legendary summer jams from the Juicy crew always sell out, Gorilla’s killer sound system the perfect place for the quick fire RnB, hip hop and bashment smashes that Oscar Wildstyle and Wiggie Smalls are famous for.
