Gil Scott-Heron’s passing five years ago was that bittersweet musical turning point – saddening those who have loved his artistry as a poet and musician, but also acting as a catalyst for his material’s longevity in popular culture, discovered and enjoyed further and wider via the likes of Jamie XX, Rihanna and My Morning Jacket. Award-winning jazz and soul vocalist Charenee Wade’s interpretation has set a new standard for Scott-Heron’s legacy. Last year she formed a band of some of the genre’s finest musicians to adapt the revered songwriter’s lyrics for an album released via Motéma, which showcases her vocal virtuosity under the influence of classic jazz singers Betty Carter and Sarah Vaughan while delivering an enrapturing homage, a show we’ll have the chance to see in Manchester this month.
