Punk legend Don Letts will be taking his turn on Electrik’s single deck set up when he comes to the Chorlton bar this month. The Grammy-winning music pioneer is credited with bringing reggae to the punk scene, along with ground-breaking video work and founding Big Audio Dynamite. These days he can be found on BBC 6 Music’s Friday night Culture Clash show playing the likes of Goldie and Spiritualised, and it’s this spirit of crate-digging that brings him to Electrik for their no-frills 1-Deck Wednesday Socials. This weekly DJ night keeps things simple: no mixing, no headphones, no turntablism – just one music-lover and a single deck. Electrik regulars can expect everything from soul to soundtracks, with this month’s special selectors also comprising DJs Andi Hanley, Andrea Trout and Lord Chester. Letts will no doubt revive the spirit of his old haunt – London’s legendary Roxy club – with a record box fit to bursting with old and new school dub reggae. He will be in good company as previous players of Electrik’s wheel of steel have included snooker legend Dennis Bovell, Andrew Weatherall, Mr Scruff and even snooker legend Steve Davis. All this in an independent café bar with its own secret garden – and entry is free.
