Review: The Lowry’s interactive textile art exhibition Edit.02 by > thread {}

Exhibitions don’t get much more hands-on than Edit.02: > thread {}, the latest in The Lowry’s series of art projects. Pop your finger on the keyboard as instructed and watch your biodata appear as a pretty pattern on a screen, not unlike a BBC ident (we are right next to Media City, after all). This was the starting point for a group of young people collaborating with Islington Mill-based trio Vicky Clarke, Sally Gilford and Cheryl O’Meara, who captured the rhythm of the participants’ hearts using a pulsometer. Each unique voltage algorithm was translated into binary code to create separate digital images, which were screenprinted onto fabric and joined together in a Tetris-inspired, honeycomb-reminiscent patchwork quilt of ample proportions. Take off your shoes and sit on the piece to enjoy the accompanying colour-filled animations and mesmerising soundscape – loops of audio recorded in the print studio, pulsing and strangely cocooning.
