Hit the North: 50 years of Manchester photography exhibition at Central Library

The next show in Central Library’s first-floor gallery space begins in April, celebrating five decades of Northern photography. Hit the North showcases the studio portraits and rural/urban landscapes of several photographers. Salford-based Phoebe Kiely is a recent graduate from MMU, but her work – which captures inner-city life – has already been exhibited at Tate Modern in London and Open Eye in Liverpool. Chris Harrison was serving as a sniper in the British Army when he took up photography. He later earned a master’s degree from the Royal College of Art, and created a series of portraits of young men from Salford. Since 1968, Ian Macdonald has focussed on the hinterland of his native Cleveland (the one in Teesside) – printing his work by hand, using traditional silver-based processes.
