Northern Carnival 40th Anniversary Exhibition Opening at Manchester Digital Music Archive (pictured)
Our first pick of free things to do in Manchester this week is this exhibition opening at the Manchester Digital Music Archive on Monday. This year marks 40 years since the Northern Carnival Against the Nazis, a legendary rally and protest gig held in Moss Side with performances from Buzzcocks and reggae group Exodus amongst others. This exhibition gathers previously unseen photos and objects from the gig, documenting the 1978 show whilst also questioning what we are doing to tackle racism today. This opening event features a drinks reception, speakers and special guests including artists who performed all them years ago.

This week the chosen film is beloved 1987 fantasy comedy The Princess Bride, which will be being broken down and interpreted by a roster of artists including beat poet Elise Hadgraft and American comic Kate McCabe. This night is free to attend, but donations of £3 are requested on the door.

The International, National & Local in Arts, Health & Social Change at The Whitworth
This year MMU launches the new Manchester Institute: Arts, Health & Social Change, and this is one of their first events. The Institute was set up to explore the relationship between art and heritage and to question art’s ability to deliver social change and good health outcomes. Speakers at this event include arts for health advocate Dr Rebecca Gordon-Nesbitt and the visiting Japanese artist Yutaka Moriguchi, as well as Institute directors Clive Parkinson. Places for this are very limited, so booking ahead of time is recommended.
Wed 5 Sep, The Whitworth, The University of Manchester, Oxford Road, Manchester, M15 6ER, 1pm – 4.30pm, www.eventbrite.co.uk

IDLES at Fopp
Bristolian punk band IDLES are coming to the city-centre record store on Thursday to perform a ‘free’ gig. They’re currently touring in support of their latest album Joy As An Act Of Resistance, which they will be signing copies of at the show. Whilst this gig is technically free to attend, entry is limited to people who’ve picked up a copy of their latest album, so if you want to go you’ll have to kick it old school and purchase some physical media.
Thu 6 Sep, Fopp, 19 Brown Street, Manchester, M2 1DA, 5.30pm, www.fopp.com
