From lust, love and longing in Paris to losing it in Louisiana, there’s bound to be some thrilling sights in tights in ‘full-blooded ballet’ Manon, on tour outside London for only the second time in over 30 years. Based on the classic pre-Revolution Prévost novel Manon Lescaut, Kenneth MacMillan’s 1974 dance version, famous for its expressive choreography, has been hailed as a masterpiece, and is presented here by the English National Ballet with music from composer Jules Massenet performed live by the English National Ballet Philharmonic. The dramatic story sees the young and naïve title character torn between two men; in fact she’s torn between a life of riches with Monsieur GM or a life of rags with Des Grieux, despite loving him more. Oh dear, it’s quite a dilemma, but one resolved by Manon finding herself deported from France and ending up in New Orleans. Soap opera, 18th-century style.
