Art exhibition: Lowry and The Pre-Raphaelites at The Lowry

The Pre-Raphaelites were 19th century artists who rebelled against the conventions of their time. They produced a style of painting not influenced by Raphael, whom they believed had a corrupting effect on the world of art. Among the many fans of this group was local legend L.S. Lowry, and from November, the venue named in his honour will celebrate this connection. ‘Lowry & The Pre-Raphaelites’ is a new exhibition which will bring together more than 40 works by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Ford Madox Brown, Coley Burne-Jones, and others. Rossetti was a particular favourite of Lowry’s, and works of his on display will include ‘The Bower Meadow’ (pictured) and ‘Portrait of Alexa Wilding’. The latter is chalk on paper sketch which Lowry himself owned, and which hung on his bedroom wall until his death, because Rossetti was the one artist whose work ‘he wanted to look at last thing at night and first thing each morning’.
