Art Auction at Alphabet Brewing Company
On Friday night, Piccadilly-area brewery Alphabet is hosting a charity art auction at their archway headquarters in aid of local cause MCR Homeless – a fund set up by mayor Andy Burnham to tackle the city’s homelessness crisis. The night will feature live performances from guitar bands The Any Numbers and Hey Bulldog, one-man-electro-band le-naSty and singer-songwriter Gary Taylor. The real star will be the auction itself, with items up for sale including signed vinyl, art prints and even photographs from the legendary Stephen Wright – the man who snapped the famous picture of The Smiths outside Salford Lads’ Club. Get down and get bidding!

Chantal Joffe at Manchester Art Gallery (pictured)
Artist and Royal Academy member Chantal Joffe swings by the Manchester Art Gallery this Saturday afternoon for an in-depth discussion with curator Dorothy Price. Inspired by the work of Paula Modersohn-Becker – a 19th century German painter, and the first woman to dare produce a nude self-portrait – Joffe presented an exhibition of paintings of female friends entitled ‘Personal Feeling is the main thing’ at the The Lowry earlier this year, and has since assembled a book of work in collaboration with London gallery Victoria Miro. Here she will be discussing her work, the work of Modersohn-Becker, and the depiction of women in art.
