It’s almost time to lubricate your chain and get the Lycra out of mothballs for the North West Velo Fest. This two-week long, free event is aimed at cyclists of all skill levels. It launches at the end of May with a glitter and UV themed ride through the city centre, ending at a secret location where you can dance the night away. Marking 50 years since the first moon landing, this year’s festival has a sciencey theme, and features a guided tour about the scientists and engineers who lived or worked in Manchester. There are also guided rides about art, history, and photography, where you can learn from the comfort of your own saddle. The festival coincides with the World Naked Bike Ride. This ‘bare as you dare’ protest aims to raise awareness of unsafe roads, oil dependency, and pollution. The festival’s finale is an Alleycat – that’s cyclist speak for a mounted treasure hunt – with an after party at Alexandra Park.
