Hot 8 first garnered international attention with their pounding, sing-along, clap-along cover of Marvin Gaye’s Sexual Healing and an appearance in Spike Lee’s Hurricane Katrina documentary, When The Levees Broke. Much of their recorded work with New Orleans label, Louisiana Red Hot, had been wiped out by the disaster but UK label Tru Thoughts picked them up after hearing Quantic spin the above tune before releasing it themselves in an edition of 500, quickly having to repress due to overwhelming demand. An 8 man New Orleans powerhouse of brass and sweat, band leader Bennie Pete (he’ll be on tuba on the night) describes their sound as “feel good music, music with a message … life music”. Expect heavy horns with a hip-hop swagger.
