Visitors still have time to catch Manchester Art Gallery’s celebration of the life and career of artist Derek Jarman, with the venue even extending its opening hours before the programme draws to a close on Sun 10 Apr.
Protest! is an extensive retrospective that chronicles Jarman’s engagement with both art and society by exploring a selection of his paintings, films and literature output.
Marking 26 years since his death, the exhibition aims to cover all areas of Jarman’s life and work, with a particular focus on his collaborations with young filmmaking and acting talent, including Tilda Swinton, Sean Bean and bands like The Smiths and Pet Shop Boys.
Visitors are offered a glimpse into Jarman’s creative process by exploring archival material linked to his set-design work, including sketchbooks, photographs and scripts, whilst also being able to track his creative change-of-pace following his HIV diagnosis in 1986 by viewing diaries and memoir materials.
Currently the gallery is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays each week, but from the start of April it will just be closed on Mondays, opening again on Tuesdays to the public from Tue 5 Apr, between 10am-5pm each day.
The extended opening hours also mean more time for visitors to see the rest of the gallery’s internationally significant collection—all free of charge—including Out of the Crate featuring historic and contemporary sculpture, Trading Stations, which looks at the history of hot drinks, and a new display exploring the climate emergency.
