New exhibition Trading Station, exploring the social history of hot drinks, opens at Manchester Art Gallery this weekend. Just one of our picks of free things to do in Manchester this weekend.
On Saturday afternoon, Manchester Art Gallery will be previewing its latest exhibition. Trading Station looks at the storied history of hot drinks: How they’ve shaped our lives, our values and transcended social boundaries. The exhibition features teapots, crockery and cafetieres spanning the past four-hundred years in beverage drinking. At the time of writing, this preview is listed as Sold Out, but it’s always worth checking back on the day.
Get some Christmas cheer this Saturday evening, with this free carol concert in the heart of Chorlton. The Royal Oak hosts this short concert organised by Redeemeer Church, and offers family friendly activities, along with the traditional sing-along carols we all know and love.
Environmental activist movement Extinction Rebellion show that it’s not all about protests this Sunday, as they host this vegan winter fair at Redbank. Done in partnership with food fair aficionados GRUB, the XR Winter fest promises street food from the likes of Handlebar Burrito and the Hip-Hop Chip Shop, alongside with a wide selection of local draft beers and performances from local musicians.

Oxford Road nano brewery and bar ÖL celebrates its second birthday this weekend. So they’ll be celebrating from midday on Saturday. As a nano brewery, ÖL produces its own beer in very small batches, so you’ll have to get in early to grab a pint of whatever they’ve cooked up for the occasion – but don’t worry if you don’t, because they do sell craft beers from other breweries too.
