Cultureplex continues to be a top spot for creative workshops, unusual events and brilliantly-selected film – so much so that it’s sometimes difficult to know what to choose from a plethora of events each month. We’re strict with ourselves though, so our top five picks in February really are the crème de la crème; we even cut this fabulous sounding PopCultures: Kate Bush event in order to stick to five things *only*. Totally ruthless – but it does mean that the choices below are ones you can trust.

Workshop by Foilco | Sun 2 Feb | 11am - 5pm | Free

This free workshop is an introduction to the shiny, shiny joys of hot stamping foils – the beautiful, metallic embellishments you sometimes see on artworks and stationary. Get to grips with both the traditional (hot stamping) and modern (toner foiling) methods, then have fun exploring the tools and equipment. You can either create new artworks on the day or bring along something you’d like to add foil to (black and white images only). Booking is essential – be quick, as this one might well sell out.

Into the Gathering Dusk Bar Takeover | Mon 3 Feb | 6pm - late | Free

So it’s February, which means Dry January is well and truly over. If you’re really looking to kick abstinence into touch, then this bar takeover might be just the thing: botanical cocktail night Into the Gathering Dusk is bringing its wild menu of cocktails, tinctures and cocktails to the Cultureplex South Bar for an evening, complete with a special DJ. The drinks will be spectacular and there will be dancing. So long, sobriety!

Craft Punk: Embroidery | Tue 4 Feb | 6.30pm - 9pm | £10

Learn how to embroider your own piece of hoop art with Craft Punk at Cultureplex, a not-for-profit for people of all ages, genders, sexualities, backgrounds, races and abilities. Booking is essential but all the materials and instruction are provided for the price of a £10 ticket. Craft Punk fosters a super relaxed, friendly environment, with an emphasis on making things and meeting new people – what more could you want for a Tuesday evening?

Queen & Slim | Sat 8 Feb, Mon 10 - Wed 12 Feb | Various Times | From £5

Watch the mesmeric Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie Turner-Smith as the leads in this staggering love story that confronts the toll of racism and violence in America. Already garnering glowing reviews, Queen & Slim starts with a forgettable date – and escalates into tragedy, trauma and the new couple inadvertently becoming a symbol of something greater than themselves.

Love Party | Fri 14 Feb | 7pm - midnight | £10

Friday 14 February – you’d like a date, and you happen not to have one. What do you do? Swipe frantically on Tinder, or… book a ticket for Love Party, a fun, f*ck it event where you get to meet people in person, at a great bar, with super low stakes. The skilled host for the evening will help with introductions, there’s an optional handkerchief signalling system to indicate your predilections if you’d wish (delightfully old school), drinking, dancing and a ‘wine with good people’ vibe. What’s not to love?
