Manchester is getting its first new public park in almost 100 years

For the first time in 90 years, there are plans to create a new public park in Manchester – and the government has just given the project a £23m cash boost. Mayfield Park, which is proposed for a location close to Piccadilly Station on the banks of the River Medlock, is part of a larger plan to build hundreds of new homes in an area south of Fairfield Street.

The new green space is planned to span 6.5 acres and will be Manchester’s first public park since Wythenshawe Park opened in 1926. Sir Richard Leese, Leader of Manchester City Council, praised the new funding for the project, remarking on the ‘transformative potential’ of the project, particularly as Manchester starts to look towards economic recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic.
