Islington Mill is a venerable old building in Salford which was converted into a creative hub some 20 years ago. To date, it has helped over 4,000 people on their way to becoming professional artists and performers. The venue will soon be changing dramatically, as it has been awarded grants of almost £7 million. The money will be used for improvements to the Mill itself and to create a major artist-led community around the current site. Called The Other City, this will provide 25,000 square feet of workspace for small-to-medium sized creative businesses. Along with the physical space, there will also a support programme to help artists of all kinds to apply their skills. The wider aim is to enhance Salford as a cultural centre and stimulate the local economy. Plus, at a time when the affordability of rent is a huge issue – it’s hoped that the development will help the artistic community resist gentrification.
