Manchester Animation Festival is back, albeit in a slightly different form than usual. Usually hosted at HOME, this year’s festival will run entirely online, making it possible for them to bring their excellent selection of events from industry experts to even wider audiences at home. We’ve rounded up the top five things to see during Manchester Animation Festival 2020 – and unless otherwise stated, the events are available to view from the time stated until the end of the festival on the Monday 30 November, so even if you’re not free on the day you can still tune in.
Writer and director Jim Capobianco joins the festival for a live Q&A about his forthcoming feature The Inventor, starring Stephen Fry and Daisy Ridley. Capobianco received a 2008 Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay for his work on Pixar’ Ratatouille, so he’s sure to have some fascinating insight into how animated films are created – from the writing stages, right up to the final product.
Academy Award winning artists Alison Snowden and David Fine for the multi-award winning animation studio Snowden Fine will be on hand to answer any questions you have about writing, directing and creating animated films. Snowden and Fine are also the recipients of this year’s MAF 2020 Fellowship Award recognising industry excellence within the animation sector. Throughout their company’s extensive career they’ve worked on a huge variety of projects, so this is the perfect opportunity to get your burning questions about animation answered once and for all.
The Voiceover Social Podcast will lead this workshop which gives animators the chance to develop new skills in directing and character development. It will consist of a hands-on approach to developing and directing a character, and working with a voiceover artist to help them deliver a perfect performance. If you’re interested in working on your own animated films, this is an unmissable opportunity. This workshop is only available at the time it takes place and will not be available to stream afterwards, so don’t miss out!
Some of Passion Pictures’ leading animation talent will be available at this roundtable, discussing the art of animation and answering any questions you have about how they contribute to an animated film. Passion Pictures’ work includes several music videos for Gorillaz, and Compare the Market’s meerkat campaign featuring Aleksandr Orlov. Known for crafting engaging stories and captivating characters, this is great chance to get some insider knowledge on how to make a successful studio.
