As we face the reality of the second lockdown, it’s possible to look at some of the positives — like venues and organisers coming up with great events that we can take part in from home, without facing the wintry November weather. We’ve picked out a few of the best free things to do at home this week, including an online pop-up event from Manchester Craft and Design Centre and an interactive virtual reality film from HOME.
Bread Records have been hoping to get back to their normal home at the Salford Arms for quite a while now, but have kept up their fantastic virtual open mics from the first lockdown right up until now. Join the Bread Social Facebook group and book yourself a slot, or just tune in and watch some amazing performances from local artists.
The People’s History Museum has brought its Radical Lates online. This week, Emmanuela Yogolelo and Samuella Ganda will creatively engage the audience in a conversation about climate justice activism, specifically focusing on the ways in which colonialism, conflict, race and migration connect with climate change, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) and people arriving from there to the UK. They’ll use music and other art forms to narrate their opinions, and will be joined by a couple of other climate activists for what’s sure to be a rich and thought-provoking conversation.
If you’re keen to shop local but a lot of your favourite spots are closed due to lockdown, never fear — Manchester Craft and Design Centre have the perfect solution. This Friday night, they’re hosting an Instagram event, giving you the chance to browse a huge selection of beautiful gifts from the comfort of your own home. Just visit their Instagram at the start of the event to find out how to browse and buy from some of their incredible makers and traders.
This 360 degree, virtual reality film was created by HOME’s Future 20 Collective (a group of artists aged 18-25) in collaboration with Studio Morison. It invites you to imagine the last place on Earth via an interactive video — you can look around by using your trackpad, moving your phone or looking around through a VR headset.
