Manchester’s famous Santa Claus attraction is set to arrive in St Peter’s Square this weekend, proving that not even COVID-19 can stop St Nick from bringing us a little Christmas joy.
The 12-metre-high festive figure – which weighs 2.3 tonnes – will overlook the square and greet passers-by on their way to work or on their Christmas shopping sprees – if they’re not self-isolating, that is. The giant Santa selfie-spot will be adorned in low-energy LED lights that will light up the night sky and be officially switched on during the first week of December.The lights are set to be launched not by a celebrity, but by a trio of real NHS heroes who have worked tirelessly on the frontline to help keep us safe and sound throughout the pandemic.
You can also follow a Christmas trail of other light sculptures that will be scattered throughout the city centre in places such as Piccadilly Gardens, New Cathedral Street and the traditional manger in St Ann’s Square.
