As we inch towards a (fingers crossed) full reopening, there’s loads to look forward to in Manchester over the next couple of weeks – not least the Manchester International Festival, which begins on Thursday 1 July and is sure to liven up the city centre. For now though, here are our picks for the best free things to do in Manchester this week, featuring French Film Club at Alliance Francaise, the latest Bruntwood Stage takeover at HOME’s Homeground and much more…
Artist and sculptor Liam Fallon’s work explores queer culture, particularly through materials. Courtship, his new installation, takes the form of a trebuchet and explores how objects are able to perform an abstract notion of courtship by combining MDF, paint, rubber and more. Definitely worth a visit this week.
The latest online screening by the folks at Alliance Francaise de Manchester is Camille by Boris Lojkine. Set in the Central African Republic in 2013, it follows the journey of freelance photojournalist Camille Lepage who uncovers the dark side of the country’s civil war.
This looks fascinating: an online talk held by the Manchester and Lancashire Family History Society given by Denise Bates. It explores the lives of the 300+ women and girls who worked in England and Wales’ coal fields in the 1840s.
Two musical ones to end with – Brighter Sound are a fantastic Manchester-based charity, nurturing the next generation of music makers with a strong focus on supporting the underrepresented. Here, they takeover HOME’s new Bruntwood Stage at Homeground for an all-dayer. Check out HOME’s schedule for more details of this event.
And finally – live events are on their way back, and we’ve definitely missed wandering around Manchester’s record stores. Wilderness is one such store, and they’re celebrating re-opening and the return of events with a day of live music on Saturday, featuring the DJs from Arcadia Sounds. Pop along for a bop.
