This summer has absolutely rinsed us, but we wouldn’t have it any other way. There’s nothing we’d rather spend our money on than good grub and a bevvy – even if it’s chucking it down (resilience is key).

Lucky for us, Greater Manchester never stops supplying us with fab foodie talent across its boroughs. And on that note, lets dive into our top picks for this month…

Neapolitan-style pizza sarnies at Hatch

We all need pizza, but I Knead Pizza owners Paul and Mike have a dedication to Neapolitan-style pies that will only but impress. After travelling to Italy for a first-hand education on the ins and outs of dough, the two Stockport chefs started their journey as street food vendors at Stockport Market.

Now, with over five thousand followers on Instagram, Paul and Mike bring their beloved pies to indie shopping haven Hatch. I Knead Pizza will be serving up traditional Italian pizza, including the ‘Dance with the Devil pizza (a spicy harissa base pizza, topped with Fior di Latte mozzarella, pepperoni picante, spicy N’duja sausage, jalapeños and fresh basil), and an extensive range of vegan options too!

The boys will also be selling their authentic Panuozzo sandwiches, made with a baked Panuozzo pizza dough loaf, and stuffed with saucy fillings and fresh herbs. Erm, we’ll take three, please!

Deya Brewing & friends party at Platt Fields Park

Missed out on a picnic in the park this summer? Not to worry – we’ve got one better. The UK’s favourite pale ale brewery Deya Brewing are throwing their own this weekend, and they’re bringing a few of their friends too.

Alongside a fully stocked Deya fridge, the bar will also have ales and lager from across the country, as well as a handpicked selection of natural wines from KAMPUS faves ISCA wines.

The Platt Fields Market Garden kitchen will be in full swing, with the help from Pan Asian supper club Things Palace, and the noodle queen herself: Pippy Eats.

Cancer research scientist turned acclaimed cook, Pippy Eats is a master of ramen, having penned not one but two cookbooks on noodles, dumplings, broths, and bowls. Her sell out homemade sauces were the talk of the summer last year, so you can only imagine the flavours she’ll be cooking up here.

The event will be running from Friday 20th to Sunday 22nd August, with 100% of the ticket proceeds being donated to the MUD foundation (or Manchester Urban Diggers – a local not-for-profit working towards better local food systems by growing fruit, veg and herbs for the local community).

So if you fancy grabbing some good grub and supporting a good cause – this is where you’ll be this weekend.

Bocadillo sandwiches and plantain fries at Joshua Brooks

If you’re a fan of Caribbean street food, you’ll be just as excited about this one as we are, because Joshua Brooks has handed its kitchen over to street food legends Cubanitos.

Cubanitos have been working as a ghost kitchen in the city centre for a while now, with countless popular guest spots at street food haven Grub. Well-loved for their Manchester touch on Miami-inspired Cuban street food, these guys are serving up El Cubanos with slow roasted pork shoulder, succulent torchon ham, swiss cheese, pickles, mustard and a homemade mojo sauce – hot pressed to perfection.

It’s not just sarnies either – although they do have a banging Reuben on the menu too. Cubanitos are also firing up the grill, with half-roasted chicken, burgers, and even vegan hot dogs. Sticking to their Caribbean roots, their sides menu sticks to plantain chips, braised rice, sweet potato fries and plantain mash topped with bacon (yes then).

There are so many more things on this menu that are worth shouting about from Guava shakes to banana ketchup – but we’ll save some of it as a surprise for when you indefinitely go there…

Natural wine store KERB wines opens in Ancoats

Stockist of fine natural wines by day, serving wine on tap by night – new natural wines store KERB is opening in Ancoats, just steps away from Elnecot, Rudy’s and Cutting Room Square. A place where
booze-loving beginners and elite grape experts are equal, KERB will be selling a handpicked selection of natural wines, produced by some of the finest home growers in England and Wales.

Even better – on the last weekend of every month, the shop transforms into a pop-up bar where guests can indulge in KERB’s natural wine selection in a relaxed, zero-judgement (and super cosy) environment.

Developed out of sheer passion for natural wines, KERB owners Philip and David have created a space with a core aim of being knowledgeable but inclusive – hoping to build a strong local community of natural wine lovers.

The store is set to launch on Thursday 26th August, finding a home on Henry Street in Ancoats.

Potter’s Pies at Ancoats Pop Up Shop

If you’re willing to brave the stormy skies, then you simply must head down to the Ancoats pop-up market next Saturday (28th). Alongside a plethora of other fantastic local stalls and vendors, you can grab a taste of Potter’s Pies, a Manchester-based Mum and son duo who are serving up some of best homemade pies this side of the country.

Picture this: 8 hour slow cooked lamb nihari; 5-hour slow braised steak and beef dripping roasted potatoes; Grandad’s Olde English sausages and Bury black pudding roll; Italian chicken and pesto Genovese – each coddled in a nest of buttery shortcrust pastry. For afters, they even have sweet Buckfast summer fruits pie (bit o’ me, that), best served hot with cream.

It’s worth the diary reservation just for these pies. After all, there’s nothing that’ll warm your cockles on a rainy day much like pie, mash and lashings of gravy, is there?

Straight to your door: Yane Manchester

Sometimes all you want in life is to eat restaurant quality Katsu in the comfort of your pyjamas. Well, Japanese kitchen Yane has arrived to fill that hole.

Currently available solely via takeaway, Yane are cooking up traditional home-style Japanese food, specialising in donburi (Japanese rice bowls), homemade tsukemono (pickled vegetables), and katsu kare (self-explanatory).

Yane, pronounced ya-nay, opened their kitchen late last month, but have already caught the eye of esteemed Manchester cook Pippa Middlehurst (Pippy Eats), due to the immense care and passion that goes into every dish. They don’t skimp on the portions either…

Menu highlights include: the Kyurizuke pickles – sliced baby cucumbers pickled in a sweet rice vinegar, soy sauce, and topped with chillies – the Chicken Katsudon, and the strangely beautiful Hot Spring Egg – not dissimilar to British poached egg.
