The new year got off to a flyer for the Science and Industry Museum, with a whole host of exciting, eye-opening and inspiring exhibitions still to come throughout 2022.
Here’s what’s already lined up in the museum’s ever-growing calendar…
Coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the BBC and the 40th anniversary of Channel 4, the museum will take a look back at the history of broadcasting, along with a glimpse into what the future might hold.
A particular focus will be placed on how Manchester has been a centre of broadcasting innovation, featuring Science Museum Group objects, early BBC archive material recorded in the city and pieces highlighting the very first station to have a dedicated programme for Children, 2ZY, which was founded by Metropolitan Vickers.
Fresh from winning the 2021 Praemium Imperiale award for painting, Sebastião Salgado arrives at the Science and Industry Museum with Amazônia—a stunning photography exhibition that celebrates the indigenous peoples and landscapes of the Brazilian rainforest.
Salgado spent seven years working with 12 different indigenous communities to create the exhibition which spans over 200 powerful pieces capturing a crucial tipping point in the fight against climate change. Amazônia is part of an international exhibition tour that started at the Philharmonie in Paris, with the MAXXI in Rome, SESC in São Paulo, the Museum of Tomorrow in Rio de Janeiro and the Science Museum in London all also involved.
Ever wondered what it is about music that allows it to have such a hold over us? A major new exhibition will delve into exactly why that could be.
Guests will be invited to immerse themselves in musical experiences, experiment with unfamiliar instruments and explore the science behind how musical innovations affect both our body and mind.
The biennial Manchester Science Festival will be back with a bang in October. A major highlight in the city’s cultural calendar, the latest instalment will be exploring what makes us human and asking the big question, what the future might hold for mankind?
The museum’s Experiment Gallery is currently undergoing a revamp to create a fresher, livelier space with even more opportunities for interactivity, and improved accessibility for visitors.
Completed in spring, the new space will include a thermal image camera, large-scale shadow box, buzz wire game and a collaborative ball run wall.
The Science and Industry Museum is in the midst of a multi-million-pound regeneration programme which will see major improvements carried out across multiple areas.
Work includes vital restoration work to revive and share stories of the historic Power Hall and the 1830 Station and Warehouse, decarbonisation of the site and a revamp of the Revolution Manchester Gallery.
