Parkruns have been popping up in and around Manchester for some time now, and the South Manchester edition at Platt Fields Park has become a particularly popular one. Completely free, it’s perfect for anyone wanting to dust off the cobwebs with a laid-back run that’s more about community than it is about performance.

The Great Manchester Run attracts thousands of runners every year, creating a party atmosphere complete with live music and entertainment across both a 10K and half marathon.
Televised live on the BBC, the fast and flat city centre route makes it one of the UK’s most popular race events.
10K entry is £44, while half marathon is £51.
The UK’s flattest major marathon and the fourth largest in Europe, the Therme Manchester Marathon’s favourable conditions make it another popular choice for anyone on the hunt for their personal best.
Whether you’re an elite athlete or want to split the 26.2 miles between a team of two or four, you’ll be welcomed all the same.
Public entries start at £79, though cheaper options are available through specific charities along with a fundraising target commitment.

This race is known for its iconic spectator support, incredible North West English bike course scenery, and impressive finish line in the heart of the town centre.
The swim takes place at Pennington Flash Country Park, with the bike following a three lap course finishing at Sheephouse Lane, and then the run taking in three laps around Bolton town centre and finshing at Victoria Square.
October’s cooler temperatures make the 13.1-mile half marathon an appealing mid-way choice between a 10K and full marathon. Starting and ending by Old Trafford, it attracts more than 15,000 runners and is famed for its electric Mancunian atmosphere.
Early entry is £37.50 though the cut-price slots are limited, so act fast.
The world’s most inclusive and unique run, Wings for Life recently added Manchester as one of its official run locations for.
Results aren’t measured in time, but in distance achieved. Best of all: 100% of entry fees and donations goes directly to spinal cord research and will help to find a cure for spinal cord injury. Entry price is £18 with all proceeds going directly to Spinal Cord Research.

Wilmslow Running Festival has been going for a full decade now, so you’ll certainly be in capable hands. With a half marathon, 10K and 2.5K fun run taking place across the event, whether you want to push yourself or dig out your most ridiculous fancy dress, you’ll be welcomed with open arms.
