All Things Equal: Huge FREE celebration of music & art at Mayfield Depot for International Women’s Day 2022

Creative music charity Brighter Sound has long been one of the most innovative champions of underrepresented voices in the music industry, and its latest big event promises to be true to that mission – showcasing a whole evening of curated artists in celebration of International Women’s Day.

All Things Equal is the team’s response to this day of female empowerment – or, as they describe it, their “bold new manifesto for gender equality in music”. The project sees the premiere of a large-scale and immersive audiovisual installation created by multimedia artist Rebecca Smith, aka Urban Projections, and developed over the past few months with the support of a group of creative women (inclusive) from the North of England.

As Rebecca says about the work: “This piece represents a shift in equilibrium. There is an acute sense of tension and harmony which is felt throughout, from beautifully transcendent moments of calm and reflection, to chaotic and sometimes disorientating mechanical swells. The piece tries to jostle with the journey of re-balancing and making things equal.”

Completing the installation is a custom soundtrack by “genre-splicing genius of British electronic music” Loraine James, plus a new spoken word commission by award-winning Salford poet Princess Arinola Adegbite.

In the same spirit of inclusivity, the whole event is being put on for free (pre-registration and ticket essential) and a whole host of DJs – including Girls Don’t Sync and Shannen SP – will take the party through until midnight.

All Things Equal is supported by queer-led, Manchester-based producing organisation and multi-disciplinary international festival Submerge, and is a celebration of Brighter Sound’s groundbreaking gender equality initiative Both Sides Now.
