Stockport’s market hall is a beautiful, a Victorian cast iron and glass structure completed in 1861. Once a month provides a fitting backdrop for one of the best vintage fairs in the region, The Vintage Village offers everything from vintage jewellery, clothes and other accessories to vintage luggage, furniture and collectibles. And to make it a proper ‘day out’, they programme entertainment.
This month, tying in with electric guitar pioneer Les Paul ‘s birthday, they look to the 1950s with rock’n’roll DJs DJ Jamie El Muerto, some 50s motors presented by The 3 Graces Northwest car club and a pop-up cinema in the ground floor Produce Hall.

Films showing in the 50s transatlantic triple bill are:
11.00 am We Are The Lambeth Boys (1959)
Director Karel Reisz’s compelling and sympathetic documentary about the lives of Teddy Boys in South London.
12.00 pm Expresso Bongo (1959)
Although Cliff Richard is nominally the star, Laurence Harvey owns this film!  A rollicking satire on the late 50s British music industry, it brilliantly evokes the sleazy hustle of Soho coffee bars, clubs and striptease joints.
2.00 pm The Girl Can’t Help It (1956)
Arguably the greatest rock’n’roll musical comedy ever!  Starring the luminous Jayne Mansfield, and a host of music legends including Little Richard, Fats Domino, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Julie London and The Platters.

The suggested dress code is fifties. Worry not if you don’t have suitable attire at home, you could always pop to the Vintage Village first, pick something from the array of vintage clothing and accessories for ladies and gents in the market hall and change in the loos.
